摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the generation of a bright point when an alignment layer is shaved by friction between a columnar spacer and the alignment layer, in a liquid crystal display device regulating an interval between a TFT substrate and a counter substrate by using the columnar spacer. <P>SOLUTION: A columnar spacer 150 contacts with a recessed/projecting pedestal 130 formed on an organic passivation film 101 of a TFT substrate 100, and regulates an interval between a counter substrate 200 and the TFT substrate 100 in a pixel portion. Recessed portions and projecting portions are formed on a bottom surface of the recessed/projecting pedestal 130, and the columnar spacer 150 contacts with two or more projecting portions. In the projecting portion, an alignment layer 105 does not exist, the alignment layer can be prevented from being shaved even if the columnar spacer 150 is shifted laterally. The projecting portion is lower than a flat portion on which the recessed/projecting pedestal 130 of the organic passivation film 101 is not formed, so that a center gap of a liquid crystal display device can be made smaller than peripheral gaps.
