A method, gateway and system for assigning time of a timer are provided by the invention. A method includes receiving a router request message transmitted from a terminal equipment, or a creating session request message transmitted from a mobility management network element, wherein the router request message or the creating session request message includes infrequent transmission characteristic information of the terminal equipment (101); assigning time for a timer according to the infrequent transmission characteristic information (102). Because the assigned time for the timer according to the infrequent transmission characteristic information is more than the default time of the timer, many unnecessary calls caused by router advertisement message are reduced, the waste of wireless channel resources and terminal equipment resources is avoided, and normal operation of network is ensured.
