The surgical implantation instrument (1) has an elongated frame with a block (24) at the end which may be struck with a hammer (49). There are two parallel arms (21) which carry linear guides for a prosthetic joint element (14). The end of the tool is inserted between the ends of two adjacent vertebrae (3,4). The instrument is held at 90 degrees to the spinal column when in use.
