[Class 111.] Apparatus for treating sewage comprises an air-tight underground receptacle 1 divided by a partition 4 into compartments 5, 6, one of which contains a filter bed 9, the other being provided with a sump 17 and connected by a pipe 3 with a cesspool 2. The sewage is delivered to the filter bed through a pipe 10. Solid matter is retained and liquefied in the filter bed and in the sump 17, liquid only passing on to the cesspool. Liquid soaks away through the walls of the cesspool or passes through holes 27 to subsoil pipes 28. The end of the pipe 3 may be provided with a flap valve 23 operated from above ground by a rod 24. Modified apparatus is described in which a pipe having one end in the cesspool below the level of the holes conveys liquid from the cesspool back to the compartment 5 and delivers it on to the perforated blades of a rotary sprinkling device mounted above the filter.</p> |
