[Class 80 (ii).] An epicyclic train is controlled frictionally by a single control member so as to reduce speed gradually and pass readily into adjustable reverse so as to facilitate the landing of an aircraft fitted with such propelling-gear. Aligned driving and driven shafts 1, 9, Fig. 1, are secured to a sun gear 2 and to an internal gear 7, respectively, which mesh with planets 3 supported in a loose carrier 5. Upon the spindle 4 of each planet 5 is a brake disc 24, Fig. 3, upon which brake shoes 22 pivoted at 21 are normally held by springs 23. The gearing now turns forwardly solid. The manual control (not shown) contracts a brake band d 12 which thrusts inwards rollers 17 and through toggle links 20 releases the grip of the shoes 22 on the discs 24. The discs 24 slip round so that the drive on the gear 7 is eased and the speed of the propeller shaft 9 reduced. Further contraction of the band 12 disengages the shoes 22 so that the propellers (not shown) are free to be turned by air resistance. The band 12 on still further contraction arrests the carrier 5 so that the propellers revolve backwards at a speed which is immediately responsive to hand control. A form is described with single planets in which the controlling brake is moved axially instead of radially. A form with stepped planets is described in which, in the disconnected position of the gearing, the manual control lever applies a brake to the driven or propeller shaft. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also an arrangement without means for braking the planet gears. The means for obtaining forward drives variable by slipping comprises centrifugal clutch shoes supported resiliently on the planet carrier and adapted to grip the driven internal wheel, the centrifugal action being assisted by electromagnets on the periphery of said wheel. A manual band brake acts on the planet carrier to reverse the drive. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
