A communication network controller, implemented as a virtual machine, formats data to be transmitted over the network into a series of frames. The formatted data is transferred to a radio within a basestation which is then controlled to transmit the series of frames at a frame rate that is sufficiently low for there to be a delay of at least one second between data being received over the network by the radio and the controller having to control the radio to transmit a response to that data. By allowing this delay between frames the controller can undertake additional data processing, which further allows firmware usually located at the basestation to instead be implemented in software remote from the base station. This is described within a machine to machine or machine type communication (M2M or MTC) network operating in white space, where there is limited bandwidth and/or a low data rate.
|
