The invention relates to an underwater apparatus 2 for treating contaminated water wherein the apparatus has sufficient buoyancy such that an inlet 20 of the apparatus is at or just below a waterâ s surface on top of which a pollutant such as oil rests. The apparatus separates the pollutants from water to provide recovered oil and treated water. The apparatus also comprises a water outlet 18 for returning treated water to the body of water. The apparatus may comprise an inner separation chamber 28, an outer separation chamber 30, adapted to separate the contaminated water, an extraction pump 4 and an oil extraction pump 6. Later embodiments relate to apparatus for separating first and second fluids, wherein the second fluid is denser than the first fluid, and further comprising inner and outer separation chambers; and to apparatus for separating fluids wherein the apparatus is configured to vary the flow rate of one or more of a combined inlet fluid, separated first phase, separated second phase, based on the amount of a first fluid with respect to the amount of a second fluid in a combined fluid. |
