Bodies such as small porcelain rods to be coated with carbon having a metallic lustre, particularly for high resistances, are conveyed in succession through a reaction vessel, through which passes a neutral gas containing a hydrocarbon vapour, e.g. benzine. The apparatus consists of two intersecting quartz tubes enlarged at their crossing point to form a spherical or ellipsoidal reaction chamber which is heated to 900 DEG C. by a surrounding furnace, the hydrocarbon vapour and neutral gas passing through one tube and the porcelain rods being fed through a third quartz tube enclosed in the second intersecting tube and provided with a gap of shorter length than the rods whereby carbon is deposited thereon.
|
