Bis- (halogen-hydroxyaryl)-oxides and substitution products thereof are obtained by halogenating the bis-(hydroxyaryl)-oxides by customary methods, with the introduction of one or more halogen atoms into the compounds, or by replacing reactive groups in the compounds, such as amino groups, by halogen in known manner. In either case, the hydroxy groups may be protected by alkylation, followed later by hydrolysis. According to examples, bis-(2-hydrophenyl)-oxide is brominated and chlorinated in acetic acid, or iodinated in ammonia solution, to give mono- or di-halogen derivatives, bis-(6-and 7- hydroxynaphthyl-2) oxide is brominated in acetic acid, bis-(2-methoxyphenyl)-oxide is nitrated and brominated followed by hydrolysis of the methoxy group, and bis-(2-methoxy or hydroxy-5-aminophenyl)-oxide is diazotized and converted to the brom-derivative in the customary manner, followed by hydrolysis in the case of the methoxy compound. The tetrahydronaphthyl compounds are also specified as starting materials. Specification 358,508 is referred to. Bis-2-hydroxy-5-aminophenyl oxide is obtained by nitrating and reducing the bis-(2-hydroxyphenyl) oxide. |
