PURPOSE: An apparatus controlling a digital device by recognizing motion and a method for the same using an IR(Infrared) LED(Light Emitting Diode) and an IR camera are provided to improve accuracy of motion recognition by sensing non-contact motion through an IR LED and an IR camera, thereby enlarging applicable scope of control technology by the motion recognition. CONSTITUTION: An IR LED(110) is arranged in a predetermined pattern. An IR camera(121) takes a photo of the IR LED and a user's hand image. An IR image processor(130) calculates a direction and an extent of the user's hand movement based on the IR LED image and the hand image, and generates recognition information by recognizing the user's hand motion. Based on the recognition information, a control unit(140) outputs a control signal to control operation of a digital device.
