PURPOSE: A vehicle multimedia apparatus and a method thereof according to a vehicle starting state are provided to switch a handsfree calling mode into a phone calling mode in case it is impossible to perform a handsfree calling mode operation of a smart phone. CONSTITUTION: A communication unit(210) performs local area communication. A control unit(220) transfers a phone call mode active message to a smart phone through the communication unit in order for the smart phone to be switched from a handsfree call mode into a phone call mode. The control unit connects a communication channel between the communication unit and the smart phone. The control unit transmits a calling mode active message to the smart phone through the communication channel.
