The device (2) has a control unit for activating a first selection mode or a second selection mode e.g. manual or automatic selection mode, of the device when a rotary ring (6) of a control selector (3) rotates in a first direction or a second direction, respectively. The control unit detects the rotation of the ring in the first or second direction after the activation of the first or second selection mode, so as to select an operating mode e.g. steam cooking mode, of an electrical household appliance (1). A display (4) e.g. LCD, displays one of the selection modes chosen by a user.
