Disclosed is a remote controller (112) for demand side electrical load management. The remote controller (112) includes a plurality of electrical connections for supplying electricity to a plurality of remote loads (102.1, 102.2, 102.3), a plurality of electrical switches (114.1, 114.2, 114.3) associated with the electrical connections, at least one electricity measurement device for measuring electricity supplied to or consumed by each of the loads (102.1, 102.2, 102.3) and a communication arrangement. The communication arrangement is operable to send an indication message both to a master controller (122) and to a remote apparatus (104) for demand side management. The indication message indicates the electricity supplied to or consumed by the loads (102.1, 102.2, 102.3). The indication message may be used to display an indication of instantaneous energy consumption on the remote apparatus (104). The communication arrangement is also configured to send to the remote apparatus (104) a threshold message. The threshold message includes an indication of an electricity consumption threshold and an indication of a time period within which the consumer must limit their electricity consumption to comply with the electricity consumption threshold. The communication arrangement also receives from the master controller (122) an interrupt message indicating that electricity supply to at least one of the loads (102.1, 102.2, 102.3) is to be interrupted. The remote controller (112) is also operable to, in response to receipt of the interrupt message, toggle the switch (114.1, 114.2, 114.3) to each of the at least one load (102.1, 102.2, 102.3) to which electricity supply is to be interrupted. This allows remote interruption of the supply of electricity to the at least one load (102.1, 102.2, 102.3).
