Metallic salts of high molecular organic acids are used as catalysts for the reduction of fats, oils, waxes, fatty acids, &c. to high molecular alcohols. Examples of such salts are the copper, zinc, lead, manganese, cobalt, nickel, and mercury salts of palmitic, stearic, linseed oil, rosin, and naphthenic acids; also the chromium salt of coco nut oil fatty acids. The salts are soluble or swellable in the substance to be reduced and in the reaction product. The salts may be formed within the substance to be reduced, e.g. copper carbonate and oleic acid may be added to coco nut fat and the mixture heated in an autoclave to 280-300 DEG C. under 100-200 atmospheres of hydrogen pressure. |
