<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a user to immediately use his or her desired function without performing the switching operation of a function corresponding to the purpose of use, in configurations equipped with a function as a laser pointer and a function as an input device with versatility. <P>SOLUTION: A pointing device 1 repeatedly takes the image of a screen S, and recognizes a region equivalent to a projection image on a screen S from the taken image. When the region is recognized, it is determined that the pointing device 1 is being used as a laser pointer, and the coordinate position of the projection image corresponding to the center of the taken image is calculated and transmitted to a personal computer (PC) 2 as pointed position information indicating a position pointed by a user. When the region is not recognized, it is determined that the pointing device 1 is being used as an input device, and the moving amounts in the X and Y directions of the device body are calculated from the position of a feature point about the taken images this time and previous time, and transmitted to the PC 2 as relative movement information indicating the relative moving amounts of the device body.
