A polarization conversion element (6) divides light of undefined polarization that is emitted from the second lens array (5) into P polarized light and S polarized light, and brings either the P polarized light or S polarized light into conformity with the other and emits the polarized light. A drive mechanism (20) displaces the polarization conversion element (6) in the direction orthogonal to the direction of polarization separation along the surface of the polarization conversion element (6) that is irradiated with the light of undefined polarization.
