PURPOSE: An electric power steering control device and method are provided to effectively prevent damage to a drive shaft and a ball joint at the time of backward driving of a vehicle with an electric power steering system. CONSTITUTION: An electric power steering control device comprises a reverse gear detecting unit(11), an engine RPM detecting unit(12), a vehicle speed detecting unit(13), a steering angle detecting unit(14), and a control unit(20). The reverse gear detecting unit detects the reverse gear input state of a transmission. The engine RPM detecting unit detects the current RPM of an engine. The vehicle speed detecting unit detects the current speed of a vehicle. The steering angle detecting unit detects a steering angle, the angle of a steering wheel. The control unit controls the driving of an MDPS(Motor Driven Power Steering) motor(30) to restraining a driver from operating the steering wheel when detecting a vehicle driving condition which may cause damage to a steering drive shaft and a ball joint in a reverse gear.
