The present invention relates to a method for preparing a fabric softener and to a fabric softener prepared using same, and more particularly, to a method for preparing a fabric softener containing esterquat by performing a two-step transesterification reaction on oil and tertiary hydroxyalkyl amine at a low temperature in a high vacuum state under specific conditions, and then quaternizing the resultant composition. The method for preparing a fabric softener according to the present invention can reduce the content of unconverted glyceride, glyceryl ester, or a mixture thereof, and can provide a fabric softener with excellent long-term stability.
