<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image signal processing method and display device performing the method. <P>SOLUTION: An image signal processing method is characterized in that a source image signal is converted to an image signal having an input color space for color gamut mapping, the color gamut of the image signal is reduced, and the image signal supporting colors of the reduced color gamut is mapped to an image signal supporting colors in a display color gamut that can be displayed by a display panel. If the color space is not an RGB color space, the mapped image signal may be converted to an image signal in the RGB color space. The color gamut of the image signal can be reduced by reducing the white level of the image signal to a level lower than the white level that can be displayed by the display panel. By reducing the color gamut of the image signal with respect to the display color gamut, an excess color gamut exceeding the display color gamut can be reduced.
