<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light-emitting element capable of enhancing emission intensity efficiently by suppressing the distribution of resonance frequencies of modes even when using a photonic crystal in which a plurality of defective cavities are arrayed. <P>SOLUTION: A light-emitting element includes an active layer; a photonic crystal layer constituted by introducing a defective portion that disturbs periodical refractive index distribution into the periodical refractive index distribution; and a clad layer having a refractive index lower than the average refractive index of the photonic crystal layer, and uses the defective portion of the photonic crystal layer as a defective cavity. The photonic crystal layer has a configuration where a plurality of defective cavities are arranged. The arranged plurality of defective cavities each have a long and a short axis with different length, and adjacent defective cavities are oriented in different directions. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
