<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable illuminator using an LED capable of illuminating a certain area brightly with limited power of a battery, without glare due to planar light emission, with natural shadow formed with its contour softly opaque. <P>SOLUTION: The portable illuminator is provided with an LED for a light source and a light guide plate inside a frame having an irradiation window for illumination light emission. The LED is fitted at a corner inside the frame, and irradiates incident light led from the corner into the light guide plate as illumination light from a concentric circle-shaped prism reflection surface formed on the light guide plate surface toward outside a window part. A housing for housing a battery is provided at a side of the frame. It is appropriate to have a 1/2 irradiation angle in a range from 13 to 35 degrees, with an area of the window part in a range from 40 to 150 mm<SP POS="POST">2</SP>, and it is preferable to have a frame thickness of 4 to 10 mm<SP POS="POST">2</SP>.
