401,089. Hinges ; locking nuts. GUALCO, (nee GIAMINARDI), I., 25, Corso Monte Grappa, Genoa, Italy. Sept. 23, 1932, No. 26480. [Classes 65 (ii) and 89 (i).] A hinge is held in adjusted position by friction between conical parts 6, 7 of the hinge pin 12 and correspondingly shaped apertures in the knuckles 2, 4 of the leaves 1, 3 respectively. The knuckles are pressed towards one another by springs 19, 20 arranged between shoulders 10, 11 on the knuckles and adjusting nuts 17, 18 on the hinge pin and there is a small space 21 between the knuckles to allow for adjustment. Each nut may be locked by a tapered pin 26 engaging with a cut away part of the hinge pin and having a head 25 which engages with notches in the nut, or a ball may be arranged between the end of the nut and an adjustable screw on the cap 33. Fig. 6 shows a nut 29 locked by a washer 30 having projections 31 engaging with notches 29<1> in the nut and being held against rotation by a tooth 30<a> engaging with a longitudinal recess in the hinge pin. The hinge pin may be formed with grooves 22, 23 to receive oil. In a modification, the adjusting means is provided at one end only of the hinge pin and the conical parts of the hinge pin are in the form of a sleeve secured to a plain pin. In a further modification, the lower half of the hinge pin is of square section to engage with a square hole in the lower knuckle, the hinge then being of the lift-off type.
