<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device which allows a user to recognize a display even in a dark place or under strong external light. <P>SOLUTION: The display device performs a display, changing the gradation number according to an external light intensity. The device can switch display modes according to a content displayed on a screen. The display modes for display contents include a text display mode for displaying mainly characters and marks, a picture display mode for displaying an image having a few number of colors such as a so-called Manga, and a video mode for displaying a natural image having a large number of colors such as a photograph or a moving image. By properly switching the gradation number depending on these display modes, visibility can be secured in a large range of conditions from a dark place or a room with a fluorescent lamp to an outdoor place under sunlight. For example, the gradation number is switched to 2 through 8 in the text display mode, 4 through 16 in the picture display mode and 64 through 1024 in the video mode for displaying. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
