The handpiece (20) has an electromechanical vibrator (21) i.e. piezo transducer, vibrating a dental tool (22) held on the handpiece. Interchangeable LEDs (23) illuminate a working area of the dental tool. A supply unit (10) of an adapter e.g. connecting plug, supplies electrical power to the LEDs, where the electrical power is branched off from the electrical power supplied to the vibrator. The supply unit comprises a multi-stage electronic circuit with a transformation stage, a rectifier stage and a control stage. The LEDs generate light for exciting fluorescence radiation.
