The controller has a switching valve (5) i.e. 3/2-way valve, comprising a detent (29) for maintaining a respective switching position in a powerless state, where the controller forms a base controller (15) for shifting a clutch (8) between closed and open states. The base controller comprises a clutch port (28) for the clutch, an exhaust port (31) for an oil sump (9), and a supply port (1) to pressurized oil supply units (30, 40). Two extension ports (22, 23) connect the hydraulic controller with a modulation module (16) and are connected with the clutch and exhaust ports, respectively. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for controlling of a shifting element of a ship transmission (2) a modulation module.
