Disclosed is a method for controlling a washing machine capable of compensating for a vibration characteristic due to an unbalanced state of a drum, by effectively controlling a ball balancer for compensating for a balance of a rotary body such as a drum. The method includes accelerating the drum having laundry therein for a first time duration (t1) until the drum reaches a reference speed from a stationary state, and decelerating the drum for a second time duration (t2) longer than the first time duration (t1) until the drum reaches the stationary state from the state having the reference speed.
