A three-phase converter is operated with different modulation techniques which are selected from a group of modulation techniques including one-phase clock, two-phase clock and three-phase clock. The operation of the converter is switched between the different modulation techniques, depending on the operating state of the three-phase system. An independent claim is included for three-phase converter.
