PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the capacity of a magnesium ion secondary battery.

SOLUTION: A negative electrode active material for a magnesium ion secondary battery which operates by absorption and desorption of magnesium ions at a positive electrode and a negative electrode, contains graphite having plate-like graphite monoatomic layers 11 and 12 composed of a crystal lattice of carbon atoms, and magnesium ions 13 and 14 can be disposed between the adjacent graphite monoatomic layers 11 and 12 in three dimensions.
