Provided is a small-sized/thin projection-type image display device having excellent portability/mobility, in which cooling performance is enhanced without adversely affecting the thickness of the device. The projection-type image display device comprises lens arrays (3, 4) for dividing the light emitted from a light source (1) into a plurality of luminous fluxes, a collective lens (6) for collecting the light from the lens arrays (3, 4), a color-separating optical system for separating the colors of the light from the collective lens, image display elements (13R, 13G, 13B) for forming an optical image from the light separated by the color-separating optical system, a projection lens (19) for projecting the optical image, and a cooling fan (20) for cooling the image display elements; wherein cooling air (200) propelled by the cooling fan (20) is supplied to the image display elements through a channel formed in a region through which light passes in the color-separating optical system.
