Method for transferring a processor-specific firmware to a working memory of an automation device

A boot program (20) is loaded into a main memory (12). The boot program is executed by a processor (16) at the start of programmable controller (10) such that program code instructions for identification of different processors are provided in boot program. A firmware transfer function is called while executing boot corresponding to respective identified processor so that appropriate firmware among several firmwares (30,32,34) stored in a firmware memory (14) is transferred into main memory using firmware transfer function. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) computer program for operating automation device; (2) digital storage medium for storing program for operating automation device; and (3) automation device.
