A method for determining naphthenic acids derived from different sources, in particular oil sands process water by identifying particular tricyclic and pentacyclic diamondoid carboxylic acids (adamantine or diamantine carboxylic acids). Once identified the relative concentrations of the diamondoid acids are compared in the sample to provide a distinctive profile for a given source. The diamondoid acids or their methyl ester derivatives may be identified using gas chromatography coupled with time of flight mass spectrometry, GCxGC/ToF-MS.
