A wave powered generator comprises a ballast tank 40 that supports the wave powered generator. In storm conditions, air is vented via valve 50, allowing water to enter through valve70, causing the arrangement to sink below the surface. Submerged depth may be controlled by admitting compressed air from tank 80 via valve 130. A float 100 of the wave energy generator may be folded into a protection position on top of the device in high waves, and this may activate the air vent valve 50 directly. Compressed air may be provided by the wave powered device during operation. The ballast tank 40 may also be used to trim the depth of the generator during operation. The tank 40 may include a massive item such as a concrete block 140.
