The method involves moving a selected playing ball from a starting position through a pickup area of an image recording unit. A mass centre of depiction of the ball in an image (300) from the recording unit is kept unaltered for a prescribed period. The image position is determined, and a determination is made to find whether portions of the depiction are situated outside a lateral edge. The ball is returned to the area when the portions are situated outside the edge. An identification result corresponding to a symbol on a surface of the ball is determined based on the image. An independent claim is also included for a device for identifying a selected playing ball from a prescribed number of playing balls. |
