发明名称 Improvements relating to controlling means for change-speed gearing upon motor-vehicles
摘要 416,407. Controlling change-speed gearing and clutches. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION, 105, West Adams Street, Chicago, U.S.A. Dec. 10, 1932, No. 35068. Convention date, Dec. 11, 1931. [Class 80 (ii).] Control mechanism for change-speed gearing upon a vehicle comprises a fluidoperated servomotor 28, Fig. 1, for disengaging the engine clutch 16 and another like servomotor 44 for operating change-speed gearing 26, and both motors are controlled by a common valve 36 interposed between them and a source of energy 14, the common valve 36 being operated from the accelerator pedal 40<1>. In a preferred arrangement, the source of energy 14 is the intake manifold of the engine 10 and the change gearing 26 is an auxiliary two-speed box in series with main three-speed and reversing gearing 24 which is manually controlled. The connecting-rod 52 of the motor 44 is connected to a gearchanging rod 58 by a crank lever 56 with a spring ball 98 to hold the lever 56 in two gear settings. The motor 44 is pivoted to the chassis at 46. The motor 44 is connected by suction pipes 68, 68<1> past a separate manual control valve 43 to a pipe 34 which connects the main clutch disengaging servomotor 28 to the three-way common valve 36. The piston 30 of the motor 28 is connected by a link to a conventional clutch pedal 32. The common valve 36 is operated either before or after the throttle 12 is opened or closed by a connection 38 with a throttle rod 40 controlled from the accelerator pedal 401 There is lost motion at 42. On release of the accelerator 40<1>, the valve 36 is opened to suck down the piston 30 and release the clutch 16 ; on depressing the accelerator, the clutch is let in. A control valve 43 for the auxiliary change is placed handy to the left foot of the driver. In the released or closed position shown, the pipe 68 and motor 44 are vented to atmosphere. Depression of the valve 43 sends suction to the motor 44 which energizes it so that it makes a change in the gearing 26 from whichever speed is in action to the other. The construction of this motor 44 forms the subject-matter of Specification 416,444, [Group XXVIII]. Within the connecting-rod 52 are a bore 60, Fig. 2, connected to the suction pipe 68 and a bore 62 vented to atmosphere at 64. A piston 48 of the motor 44 is shown in a neutral position with ports 76 and 74 registering with ports 84, 82 of the bores 60, 62, respectively. Both compartments 94, 96 are vented to atmosphere and the crank lever 56, Fig. 1, is held in a gear position. When it is desired to change the driving ratio with a fixed setting in the gear-box 24, it is merely necessary to declutch by releasing the accelerator 40<1> and then to open the valve 43 by depressing it. The right compartment 96, Fig. 2, is thus connected to suction and the piston 48 moves to the right to a position shown in Fig. 3, thereby compressing a spring 88. The hub 50 of the piston 48 having engaged a stop 102 on the rod 52 carries the rod 52 to the right, thereby actuating the crank lever 56, Fig. 1, and changing speed in the two-speed gearing 26. As a step-down in traffic this change is useful. On the driver lifting his left foot, a piston 70 of the valve 43 returns to the position shown, venting the pipe 68 and the compartment 96 to atmosphere. The spring 88, asserting itself, brings the piston 48 to the position shown in Fig. 4 with the other compartment 94 connected to the suction bore 60 by registering ports 72, 80 and the compartment 96 connected to the atmosphere bore 62 by ports 78, 86. The next depression of the valve 43 moves the piston 48 to the left, which, by engaging a stop 102<1>, carries with it the rod 52 which thus changes the speed in the auxiliary gearing 26 back to its former value. When another piston spring 90 has asserted itself, the parts are brought back to the ready position of Fig. 2. The accelerator pedal serves the triple function of controlling the throttle, the clutch, and speed-changing mechanism.
