PURPOSE: A device and method for controlling the brightness of a flat display panel are provided to uniformize brightness for a whole screen of the flat display panel by applying reverse compensation data in a pixel unit to an inputted image signal. CONSTITUTION: A brightness measuring unit measures a brightness value at each position. A pattern curve generator(20) analyzes the brightness deviation of a display panel. The pattern curve generator generates a pattern curve. A reverse compensation data generator(30) generates reverse compensation data in a pixel unit by applying a reverse compensation algorithm to the pattern curve. A reverse compensation data applying unit(40) applies the reverse compensation data to an image signal.
