<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for producing gas rich in oxygen. <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus for producing the gas rich in oxygen includes: (a) a primary gas pump including a first and a second compressor, wherein the primary gas pump is characterized by a weight W<SB POS="POST">p</SB>; (b) a drive motor adapted to drive the first and second compressors; (c) a rechargeable power supply characterized by a weight W<SB POS="POST">b</SB>; and (d) a pressure/vacuum swing adsorption unit adapted to separate the pressurized feed air into an oxygen-rich product at a product flow rate F<SB POS="POST">p</SB>and an oxygen-depleted waste gas, wherein the adsorption unit comprises a plurality of adsorber beds containing an adsorbent and characterized by a total adsorbent weight W<SB POS="POST">a</SB>, wherein the combined weight W<SB POS="POST">t</SB>of the adsorbent, the primary gas pump, and the rechargeable power supply is characterized by the expression 0.75 F<SB POS="POST">p</SB><W<SB POS="POST">t</SB><2.02 F<SB POS="POST">p</SB>where F<SB POS="POST">p</SB>is in liters per min (at 23°C, and 1 atma pressure), and W<SB POS="POST">a</SB>, W<SB POS="POST">p</SB>, and W<SB POS="POST">b</SB>are in pounds. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
