<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase light extraction efficiency while simplifying the manufacturing process, in a top emission type light emitting device comprising a combination of a white organic EL element and a resonance structure. <P>SOLUTION: In a top emission type light emitting device, an expression of D=ä(2πm+ϕ<SB POS="POST">L</SB>+ϕ<SB POS="POST">U</SB>)/4π}λ is satisfied, where D represents an optical distance from a reflective layer/pixel electrode 12 or a transparent electrode layer 15 to a counter electrode 22, ϕ<SB POS="POST">L</SB>represents a phase shift in reflection at the reflective layer/pixel electrode 12 or the transparent electrode layer 15, ϕ<SB POS="POST">U</SB>represents a phase shift in reflection at the counter electrode 22, λ represents a peak wavelength of a standing wave, and m represents an integer.
