The invention discloses a media data control method and apparatus, wherein one of the method includes: receiving a control request message from a terminal, wherein the control request message carries identifier information of a sub-stream, and a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) of the media stream which the sub-stream belongs to; obtaining the identifier information of the sub-stream and the URI of the media stream which the sub-stream belongs to; determining, on the basis of the identifier information of the sub-stream and the URI of the media stream which the sub-stream belongs to, the media data corresponding to the sub-stream; and performing the control operation requested by the terminal to the sub-stream according to the media data. The invention can realize respective control to data with different characteristics under the condition that data with different characteristics of the same type are transmitted through one same media stream.
