The shim (3) has an adhesive layer (7) covering a surface of films (5, 13) made from polycarbonate. Dimensions of the shim are adjusted such that the shim is adhered to an inner surface of a slot of a memory card reader with the adhesive layer during insertion of the shim into the slot of the memory card reader. Height of the slot is reduced such that holding force is increased on a smart card inserted into the slot. The dimensions of the shim lie in a range of thickness of 0.25 mm +- 0.05 mm, width of 25.3 mm +- 2.0 mm and length of 42.5 mm +- 4.0 mm. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a tool (2) a method for retrofitting a memory card reader.
