<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading device which can efficiently move a reader unit when a double-spread manuscript is read. <P>SOLUTION: When an MFP 100 has finished reading a double-spread manuscript like a book, etc., it determines the order in which left-hand side and right-hand side pages of the manuscript are output (S101). When the manuscript is read, if it opens to the right so that the left-hand side page is output first, the MFP 100 sets the read direction of an image sensor 15 to a direction moving from the left-hand side page to the right-hand side page. On the other hand, if the manuscript opens to the left so that the right-hand side page is output first, the MFP 100 sets the read direction of the image sensor 15 to a direction moving from the right-hand side page to the left-hand side page.
