The method involves causing an engine of a motor vehicle to stop according to a signal of storage condition. A supply of fuel to a high pressure-generating pump element (29) of a high pressure pump (3) is throttled. The high pressure pump is driven by the engine of the motor vehicle. A remaining amount of fuel is lowered in a flow (47) of the pump element upon reaching an engine stoppage situation. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a control unit for a fuel injection system of an engine of a motor vehicle; and (2) a fuel injection system for an engine of a motor vehicle.
