<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine capable of obtaining consistent combustion in lean combustion or high EGR rate combustion by generating twin whirlpools in a combustion chamber, and making the gas flow easily hit by the discharge of an ignition plug. <P>SOLUTION: When a combustion chamber is viewed from the direction of the cylinder axial line C1, an intake port 11 has a shape symmetric about the center line C2 of the combustion chamber passing through a space between two intake ports 7, 7 and two exhaust ports 8, 8. The inside of the intake port 11 is divided into a center port 14 communicating with a part close to the center of the combustion chamber by two partition walls 13, 13, and two side ports 15, 15 communicating with parts close to the outer sides of the combustion chamber. An intake control valve 16 capable of changing the passage cross sectional area is arranged in the center port 14.
