[Classes 23 and 82 (i)] Metals of different melting-points, e.g. mixed borings of white metal and bronze, are separated by feeding the metal pieces into a revolving strume or sieve in which they are formed by centrifugal force into a belt or band on the inner surface of the peripheral walls of the sieve, and causing burner flames to impinge on the inner surface of the belt or band over substantially the whole depth thereof. The apparatus shown comprises a pillar A which carries a table B on which is secured a burner box X having annular channels X<1>, X2 for air and gas respectively and passages 4 extending from the channel X<1> through the channel X<2> to the outside of the burner box where the gas mixture is ignited. Surrounding the table B is a centrifugal pan or basket comprising a bowl portion E having a sleeve E<2> which is supported on ball bearings D<2> and provided with roller bearings D, D<1>, and a rim E<1> joined to the bowl portion by bars F. Inside the bars F is an assemblage of small bars G having slits between them which preferably increase in width from the inside to the outside. The lower ends of the bars G rest in a groove in the bowl E and the upper ends are held by a cover H secured to the rim E<1>. The metal pieces are fed into the pan by a hopper I which directs them towards the wall formed by the bars G and the centrifugal force causes them to form into a belt on the inner surface of the wall, the thickness of the belt being preferably limited by a spreader J, Fig. 2. The particles of lower melting point are melted by the flames issuing from the passages 4 and are thrown through the slits in the wall and caught by a surrounding casing K preferably provided with projections L. When this metal has been separated, a member M, Fig. 2, is swung unto the path of the belt of metal which remains in contact with the wall of the pan and deflects it away from the wall and through an opening N in the table B into the lower part O of the bowl E from which it is discharged by centrifugal force through the openings P. The movement of the member M may be controlled automatically in timed relation with the movement of a conveyer feeding material into the hopper I.</p>
