A fuel cell system comprises (a) a fuel cell stack 110; (b) a cathode system having a cathode fluid flow path comprising a cathode air inlet line 123, a cathode volume within the fuel cell stack and a cathode exit line 121 connected in series and configured to allow passage of air through the fuel cell stack (110); (c) a heat exchanger 130; and (d) a water separator 131 connected via the heat exchanger 130 to the cathode exit line 121 of the cathode fluid flow path, wherein a water ejection outlet line of the water separator 131 is connected to a water containment vessel 140 by a first water return line 128. The water containment vessel 140 may be thermally insulated. A method and system for shutting down operation of the fuel cell, and a flow relief valve, are also described. |
