The method involves determining flow directions from an image of an area by a determination unit (8), and searching source points from the directions to create a binary image by a searching unit (9). The image is filtered by a filtering unit (11) to remove isolated points so as to obtain elements. The elements are subjected to a processing by a subjugation unit (13) for obtaining a set of lines formed by the source points. A set of sequences of segments illustrating ridge lines of the area is created from the set of lines by a creation unit (15) by performing successive operations. The successive operations include pre-processing of data i.e. digital terrain elevation data, extracting the ridge lines and final processing to remove duplicates and hold only segments having length greater than length of adjustable threshold. An independent claim is also included for a device for automatically determining ridge lines of a variable height area. |
