A child safety seat includes a seat shell 102 having a backrest portion 112 with a front surface having a slot, a headrest 104 adjustable along the front surface of the backrest portion, a shoulder strap 106A, and a panel 164 assembled at the front surface. The shoulder strap is formed from a webbing material that passes through the slot and extends at a front side of the backrest portion. The panel 164 covers a region of the backrest portion that becomes uncovered by the headrest at the front surface as a result of the headrest being adjusted downward or it covers a region of the slot that varies in size as the headrest is adjusted. The seat can include a transversal bar 158 affixed with the backrest portion, and a latch 126 located below the transversal bar. The latch has a locking structure 140 operable to engage with the backrest portion to hold the headrest in place, the latch being assembled with the headrest about a pivot axis X located between the transversal bar and the locking structure.
