Method for designing an optimized drill bit comprising. The method includes; defining placement parameters of a plurality of primary and secondary cutter elements and simulating use of a drill bit having the defined placement parameters to generate a value of design criteria. It is determined whether the design criteria value meets a predetermined value. A placement parameter of at least one of the backup cutter elements is redefined and the simulation is run again determine if a new value meets the design threshold. The steps may be repeated until a plurality of values are generated which meet the design criteria. A second design criteria may also be considered using generated values for the first design criteria. The design criteria considered may include resultant force on cutter elements, total out of balance force on the bit. Placement parameters may include tip height, radial position, rake angle and angular position. |
