<p>The invention improves electric power assisted steering (EPAS) by providing a system 10 which is capable of receiving a detected value of steering wheel torque and is operable to improve the accuracy of the detected value of steering wheel torque by compensating for a weight imbalance present in the steering wheel 12. The gravitational effect of an off-centre mass such as an airbag typically varies with the steering wheel angle (alpha). The invention includes a program for subtracting a determined torque contribution due to the imbalance from a sensed torque to provide a corrected value of assistive motor torque. The angle of the steering wheel 12 relative to a horizontal plane is also taken into account. Values for the torque contribution can be contained in a look up table resulting from measurements under static conditions.</p> |
