PURPOSE: A semiconductor light emitting device and a manufacturing method thereof are provided to improve a light extraction efficiency by forming a vertical groove on the side surface of a light emitting structure. CONSTITUTION: A light emitting structure(11) is laminated on a sapphire substrate(10). The light emitting structure includes an active layer(112) generating light. The light emitting structure is formed into multiple nitride epi-layers. The upper surface of the sapphire substrate is formed into an unevenness pattern. The side surface of the light emitting structure includes a vertical groove.
