<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder capable of keeping a delivery roller on a standby position without the enlargement and the cost increase of the device even if a driving force for lifting and lowering the delivery roller is cut off. <P>SOLUTION: The paper feeder includes a delivery roller 30 ascending and descending between a delivery position where it contacts a sheet and a standby position distant from the sheet and a holding member 50 disposed movably between a holding position to hold the delivery roller 30 at the standby position and a retracted position to allow the delivery roller 30 to contact a copy.
